As of 2008 statistics, 57% of transplants throughout the world were performed using the patient’s own stem cells. In 43%, stem cells not belonging to the patient were used and these cells may have come from a relative or unrelated donor. Within the 43%, a total of 64% were actually from relatives. In total therefore, the vast majority of transplants undertaken make use of the patient’s own, or a relative’s stem cells.
